Can we please talk …

the cover of fragments of the past

… about how pretty “Fragments of the Past” is? I am really confused, because the project is, for today’s standards, quite old. It was released somewhere within the last 2 to 4 years. And the most disturbing thing is … it originated on ArtStation, a website I visit regularly on a professional basis. I never heard of Massimiliano Haematinon Nigro’s project before.

I really hate Kickstarter for the sheer amount of stuff that gets pumped out daily and I really appreaciate small creators who do not use the platform to stirr a buzz for their creation. But this project is really an example that you completely fly under the radar if you are not on one of the major crowdfunding platforms.

Now the project! In the early 80s Mini-Marc wanted to become an archaeologist, not because of Indiana Jones, but because of the science. The longing for the job faded, but the passion for long gone or decaying stuff stayed. I love everything ancient, dead and mostly rotten. Just to give you an example: I live in a village (we are part of a large metropolis now) that originated from 799 AD and was founded when Charlemange reigned in Aachen. My village is built around the monastery that was founded just for his sister. But we are a young settlement compared to our neighbours like Cologne and Bonn. Just 200 meters behind my garden is the ruin of a castle from the 3rd and 5th century and three others nearly 1km away. I like old stuff … like f’ing crazy!

A setting in the bronze age is not new in terms of roleplaying, but “Fragments of the Past” is the one that spoke to me the most. I really dig books/pdfs with nice layout and artistic interiour, and oh boy … Massimiliano delivered. I always thought that Runequest was my epitome of a perfect bronze age setting, “Fragments of the Past” topped it big times.

Just take a look at this YouTube video just made on the basis of the art book that predates the RPG by two years. EPIC! Please, please, please … you yourself and Massimo a favor and get this gem! I think this is the most underrated roleplaying game ever.
